Anyone staying in a private game park will in principle go on safari by open jeep: once early in the morning and once in the evening. The evening safari is usually called a “night drive”, because it is already pitch dark during the last hour of that drive.

Most jeeps have 6 to 10 seats, but for night safaris in the national parks, slightly larger vehicles are usually used. At the very front of the open jeep is often a tracker. You will also receive a safety briefing from an armed ranger just before your departure.

During our safari tours in South Africa you can make several safaris from day safaris to evening safaris. It depends on which safari trip you choose in South Africa with us. Some trips are complete safari trips in an open safari car during almost the entire trip.

Without a doubt, the most exciting safari is when you go on foot in the African bush in search of wild animals. Except for the multi-day hikes in the Kruger Park, those walking safaris are usually limited to a long walk of a few hours, because of the heat, preferably just after sunrise.

You will also receive clear guidelines and safety instructions for such a safari. The clothing for such a step safari is also very important: no bright or striking colors, no jewelry, closed shoes, protection from the sun, etc. In many private -wildlife parks and some national parks there are shelters, usually set up at waterholes where you can just wait for game to pass at that place. A filled cool box is then necessary.

Also keep in mind that all wild animals are basically dangerous, not just predators or carnivores.

Safari is a Swahili word meaning “journey”. Its original meaning (in most languages) was an expedition to an African game reserve. The dream of anyone going on safari is to see the Big Five. In some private game parks you even get a certificate if you have seen the Big Five during your stay.

The Big Five are: elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo and leopard. These are indeed not the largest animals in the bush, because the giraffe (= the largest animal) and the eland (= the largest antelope species) are not among them. But the Big Five are the wild animals considered the most dangerous by hunters.

No zoo

Wildlife parks in South Africa are not a zoo where you see lions first, and elephants five minutes later. After all, all the animals roam freely in a huge park, and sometimes you drive around for half an hour without seeing a single animal. Except for impalas, because you will see them a lot, in every park.

And during the next hour you suddenly see three of the Big Five. A Safari is always a bit of luck, the animals are there, but they have to appear at the right time in the right place and in your field of view. Then you see them briefly: sometimes ten seconds, sometimes two minutes, sometimes half an hour. And suddenly they are gone.
